Music Box Films Releases Honored with 7 Independent Spirit Award Nominations

Music Box Films is pleased to announce that three of its recent releases were nominated today for Film Independent Spirit Awards. The filmmaking teams behind KEEP THE LIGHTS ON, STARLET and MARINA ABRAMOVIC: THE ARTIST IS PRESENT received a total of seven nominations.

Music Box Films received more nominations for its releases than any other independent distributor, and was second only to the studio-affiliated Fox Searchlight in total nominations.

“We would like to congratulate all of the filmmakers for their well-deserved recognition,” commented Music Box Films’ Bill Schopf. “This is especially gratifying for Music Box Films as 2012 marks our first foray into the distribution of American independent films.”

KEEP THE LIGHTS ON, directed by Ira Sachs, received four nominations: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Male Lead (Thure Lindhardt).

MARINA ABRAMOVIC: THE ARTIST IS PRESENT, directed by Matthew Akers, received a nomination for Best Documentary.

STARLET was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award, bestowed on the best feature made for under $500,000. In addition, STARLET’s director, Sean Baker, casting director Julia Kim, and ensemble cast (including Dree Hemingway and Besedka Johnson) have been honored with the Robert Altman Award.

Winners will be announced at the Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 23, 2013.
